Getting started with AI marketing does not require any technical knowledge. It starts with one skill: writing a good prompt.
What is a marketing prompt?
A prompt is simply the instruction you give to an AI tool like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. The quality of what comes out depends almost entirely on the quality of what you put in.
Most people write prompts like this: "Write me a caption for Instagram."
That is like hiring a copywriter and saying "write me something." You would never do that. So why do it with AI?
The anatomy of a great marketing prompt
A high-converting marketing prompt has four parts:
1. Role: Tell the AI who it is supposed to be. "You are an expert social media copywriter for small businesses."
2. Context: Tell it about your brand, audience, and goals. "My business sells handmade candles to women aged 25 to 40 who value self-care and sustainability."
3. Task: Tell it exactly what you need. "Write 5 Instagram captions for a new vanilla and cedar candle launch."

4. Constraints: Set the rules. "Each caption should be under 100 words, include one question, and end with a soft CTA to shop the link in bio."
Put it all together
Here is what that full prompt looks like:
You are an expert social media copywriter for small businesses. My business sells handmade candles to women aged 25 to 40 who value self-care and sustainability. Write 5 Instagram captions for a new vanilla and cedar candle launch. Each caption should be under 100 words, include one question, and end with a soft CTA to shop the link in bio.
Compare that to "Write me a caption." Which one do you think produces better output?
Your homework
Take one piece of content you need to create this week: a caption, an email subject line, a headline. Write a prompt for it using the four-part framework above.
Start simple. Iterate. The more you practice, the better your prompts get.
